Prepping a Patient for Flight

Being prepared will help make for a smooth transport

These simple steps can save time during pickup and ultimately provide the best experience for the patient.

  • HAVE DOCUMENTS/LABS/XRAY THAT NEED TO GO WITH PATIENT READY
  • MEDICATION NEEDED ON FLIGHT WITH PATIENT OR ANY SPECIAL SUPPLIES NEEDED
  • ALL PERSONAL BELONGINGS PACKAGED
  • FOLEY IN PLACE IF NEEDED, AT LEAST DIAPER IF INCONTINENT
  • IF POSSIBLE, LEAVE IN SALINE LOCK
  • DC TUBE FEEDING PER MEDICAL FLIGHT PERSONNEL GUIDELINES
  • HOSPITAL GOWN OR COMFORTABLE CLOTHING MAY BE WORN BY PATIENT, ALLOWING TO OBTAIN VITALS
  • PREMEDICATE PAIN/ANXIETY MEDS IF NEEDED, ONCE AMBULANCE HAS ARRIVED
  • IF PATIENT IS ON VENTILATOR/BI-PAP, HAVE RT IN ROOM FOR TRANSFER OF PATIENT
  • IF PATIENT IS ON A THICKEN FLUID DIET, BRING ENOUGH FLUID FOR THE FLIGHT TO PREVENT DEHYDRATION
  • CONSIDER COMPRESSION STOCKINGS IF NEEDED.
